Former CMC Student Gov’t Official Arrested For Alleged Sexual Assault of a Minor

A Claremont McKenna College (CMC) third-year student was arrested on Aug. 31 on alleged child sex crimes. According to the Fontana Herald News and the Fontana Police Department’s press release, David Almaraz-Roman of Santa Fe Springs was arrested on charges of possessing “thousands of pornographic images and videos on his electronic device, many of which allegedly depicted children under 18 years old in child sexual abuse situations.” The article additionally states that “[w]

CMC Student Gov’t Supports Universal Pass

According to an email sent to Claremont McKenna College (CMC) students, the Associated Students of Claremont McKenna College (ASCMC) Executive Board has supported a universal pass grading campaigned by the #NobodyFailsAtCMC movement. The movement claims letter grades unfairly benefit privileged students, demanding that the college replace letter grades with universal grades of pass/incomplete/“no record pandemic” without the option of an F (fail) for the semester. The Executi

CMC Hosts 3rd Annual Sex Week

This week, Claremont Mckenna College (CMC) is hosting its third annual “Sex Week”. The event was created in 2016 and is hosted by the CMC Advocates for Survivors, an organization that “provides confidential support to survivors of any type of sexual violence, in any way needed including counseling, support groups, and reporting or of any type of sexual violence, in any way needed including counseling, support groups, and reporting.” Several events have been planned for Monday

Social Responsibility: A Pragmatic Solution

There have been a lot of discussions on campus lately about social responsibility. Emails from the administration and ASCMC have been filling students’ inboxes with a “social responsibility contract” that supposedly represents the administration “putting the ball back into our court.” With all the rhetoric that has been thrown around about “social responsibility,” I contend that the administration has lost sight of the current social situation at CMC. It is absolutely ridicul

ASCMC and the Social Responsibility Resolution: A Call to Action

On September 26th, the Associated Students of Claremont McKenna College (ASCMC) introduced a document titled “The Resolution on Social Responsibility.” ASCMC has encouraged students to review the document and subsequently sign it, or at least offer constructive criticism so the document can be improved. The resolution marks another step in the yearlong journey to foster an atmosphere of inclusivity and increased personal responsibility. Last year, the Dean of Students Office

The Problem with Initiation

As clubs, teams, and all kinds of other extracurricular organizations at Claremont McKenna College wrap up recruiting season, many have started holding “initiations”: bonding activities, often centered on welcoming new members and building team camaraderie. Both objectives are laudable, but the means to accomplishing these objectives lately have run contrary to the best interest of the CMC community. It goes without saying that hazing and forced drinking are outright wrong an

CMC would Benefit from an Independent Forum

We at the Claremont Independent take the “independent” part of our name very seriously. Our publication operates under the principle that, in order to cover the administrations and student organizations of the Claremont Colleges objectively and effectively, complete detachment from those institutions is essential. As a result, the Independent is unique among campus publications in that it purposefully receives zero funding from any of the 5Cs. It is because of our commitment

Thursday Night Club Controversies: What to Expect

The social scene at Claremont McKenna is a tradition that is oft referenced as something that sets the school apart. Part of this tradition is Thursday Night Club or TNC. This Thursday night party has had its high points and low points, but it remains a very visible part of the social scene. However, a new tradition has recently emerged in conjunction with TNC: The theme for the party inevitably provokes outrage and accusations of insensitivity, largely from the other 4Cs. La

Secret Societies, “Private Organizations,” and Why We Should Care

The following opinion piece is written as a guest contribution to the Claremont Independent. Last month marked two years since my admittance to Claremont McKenna College. I remember the overwhelming sense of accomplishment and anticipation I felt as I signed and returned my acceptance letter. I had joined the ranks of an elite group of extremely talented students and gained access to an incredible alumni network. I had every opportunity in front of me, all thanks to CMC. Part

ASCMC Elections Committee’s Exception Yields Controversial Outcome

On Thursday, Feb. 26th, the CMC Class of 2015  elected Mohammad “Moe” Abdulrahim as Junior Class President. ASCMC requires that class president candidates  submit 50 different  signatures from classmates. ASCMC set the signature submission deadline from 10:30 to 11:00 pm on Feb. 22nd. Abdulrahim submitted his signatures at 11:17 pm. His petition violated the ASCMC Constitution: “The Elections Committee will hold a meeting for all candidates at which time all petitions must be
