“Capitalist” Bike-Sharing Program Ends at Pomona College

Earlier this afternoon, an email was sent out to notify all Pomona College students that the popular ofo bike-sharing scheme will no longer be implemented, effective next week. The reason for this cancellation was attributed to ofo’s business crisis; students have also expressed disapproval of a “capitalistic program” like Ofo. According to Robert Robinson, Associate Vice President of Facilities and Campus Service, “This type of bike-sharing has taken off nationally in recent

Pomona Plasters Social Justice Artwork Across Campus

On March 2nd, Pomona College’s Art Museum, in collaboration with “artist activist” Alexandra Bell, mounted three large works of art throughout campus, denouncing language “perpetuat[ing] racist narratives” used by the New York Times. The artwork juxtaposes enlarged printouts of select New York Times articles with versions edited by Bell containing more “racially neutral language.” One of the works has been plastered to the wall containing the main entrance of Pomona’s Lillior

Pomona Physics Requires “Decolonization” Project

Last fall semester, students in Pomona College’s Foundations of Modern Physics (PHYS101 PO) class were required to complete a “Decolonizing Physics” project as a part of their physics coursework. Taught by Professor Janice Hudgings, Foundations of Modern Physics is mandatory course for all students majoring in physics or astronomy. Yes Means Yes, Obviously

The moral climate of college is warped. On the one hand, it is a bit like living in the Scarlet Letter. Students are urged to repent for their race, gender, sexual preferences, etc., and to acknowledge and fear invisible bogeymen like the Cisheterowhitepatriarchy, which infect people, entire academic departments, and society at large. At the same time, so preoccupied with these ethereal yet all-powerful social constructions of their own invention, progressivism’s true believe

As CS Dept. Strains, Low-Demand Majors Awash in Professors

A student petition is asking Pomona College—one of the member institutions of the Claremont Colleges—to hire more computer science faculty in order to manage the drastic increase in the number of computer science graduates over the last few years. In the meantime, however, unpopular and unemployable majors, such as Africana studies and gender studies, are awash with tenured faculty members. According to the petition, the amount of majors in computer science has increased tenf

UPDATE: In Unprecedented Move, CMC Faculty Permits Seniors Who Violated Student Code to Graduate

Claremont McKenna College (CMC) told the Independent in a statement that its faculty voted in May to allow CMC seniors who violated the student code during a protest in early April aimed at preventing Heather Mac Donald from speaking at the college to partake in commencement exercises despite their conduct. According to an internal letter obtained by the Independent, this move is an unprecedented, break from the college’s standard approach to disciplinary cases. In the letter

Students Demand Administrators ‘Take Action’ Against Conservative Journalists

In an open letter to outgoing Pomona College President David Oxtoby, a group of students from the Claremont Colleges assail the president for affirming Pomona’s commitment to free speech and demand that all five colleges “take action” against the conservative journalists on the staff of the Claremont Independent. The letter, written by three self-identified Black students at Pomona College, is a response to an April 7 email from President Oxtoby in which he reiterated the col
