Construction has begun on Claremont McKenna College’s new Sports Bowl, a multi-year process that will expand the athletic facilities of the college. The new athletic complex, situated across Claremont Boulevard from the main campus, will double CMC’s current campus footprint.
The Sports Bowl will feature facilities for the 21 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Division III teams, including new baseball and softball fields, a football and lacrosse field, track, and golf practice area. At this time, Claremont McKenna is still accepting donations for the building and naming of these facilities. Prices for the naming rights of various facilities in the sports bowl range from $75,000,000 for the sports bowl itself to $100,000 for locker rooms and field dugouts.
The Sports Bowl is part of Phase 1 of the Roberts Campus, a larger building project announced in 2022. The project’s central features include the Robert Day Sciences Center, which the college anticipates opening in the fall of 2025. Phase 2 includes the Sports Bowl (expected to become fully operational in 2027), a North Mall that will connect CMC’s North Quad to the Sciences Center, a Commencement Green for major events, and a South Mall connecting Roberts Pavilion to the Sports Bowl.
Matthew Bibbens, CMC’s Vice President of Campus Planning and Capital Projects, told the Independent that the college does not have “a set schedule at this time” for the full completion of Phase 2. Upon completion, however, he noted that “This expansion will not only enhance CMC’s athletic infrastructure, but also create additional opportunities for campus development, including the potential for a new Economics building, upgraded dormitories, and additional classroom space.”
