On Thursday morning, the Claremont McKenna Board of Trustees announced that President Hiram Chodosh will be taking a sabbatical this fall. In an email, Board Chair David Mgrublian wrote, “As we celebrate President Chodosh’s ten outstanding years leading CMC, I am pleased to announce that the Board of Trustees has approved a six-month sabbatical for him, beginning July 1. To give Hiram and Priya some well-deserved time away, the Board has made several decisions to support them and facilitate their return on January 1, 2024.”
Among those decisions, the Board promoted Sharon Basso, formerly the Vice President of Student Affairs, to Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. Basso will also serve as Acting President until Chodosh returns next January. “As CMC continues to evolve, Sharon is exactly what CMC needs in this key operational leadership role,” Mgrublian wrote.
In addition, Diana Graves, the former Dean of Students, will replace Basso as Vice President of Student Affairs. Heather Antecol, who currently serves as Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty, will oversee academic matters. Mgrublian wrote that Basso and Antecol “will work closely with the President’s Executive Cabinet, the Board, and all members of the community to help execute the College’s priorities, projects, and initiatives.”
Mgrublian spoke highly of Chodosh’s ten-year tenure at CMC. “With his stellar guidance, CMC dramatically expanded student opportunities … doubled the size of its campus, more than doubled its endowment, successfully executed its Campaign for Responsible Leadership, and developed a vision for The Roberts Campus,” he wrote.
Update (6/1): On Thursday afternoon, VP Nyree Gray announced that Brian Davidson will take over for Priya Junnar as acting Director of the Athenaeum. Davidson will serve in this role in addition to his current role as director of CMC Fellowships Advising.
